As we wrap up 2024, we’re taking a moment to RETURN to the milestones, surprises, and unforgettable memories that made this year so special.  From exciting new market offerings to superb wildlife encounters, it’s been a year of growth, connection, and most importantly, a RETURN to what makes us truly unique.

Here’s a look back at what made 2024 unforgettable:

RETURN Africa’s Plane Takes to the Skies

One of our biggest highlights of the year was the launch of our plane, which has made traveling to Pafuri seamless, scenic and time-saving. Our guests love the jaw-dropping aerial views as they transit from Hoedspruit, Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) and Johannesburg.

Hutwini’s Total Makeover: A Walking Safari Like No Other

The ever-popular Hutwini Walking Safari Camp reopened for the season with a brand-new look, boasting larger guest tents and a new lounge and mess tent. This little bush camp now offers even more comfort and style while remaining true to its authentic vibe. The feedback? Overwhelmingly positive! Hutwini has firmly established itself as the go-to destination for walking safaris in 2025, with bookings coming in thick and fast.

Solving the Great African Mystery of Thulamela

Thulamela’s ruins featured in the documentary Great African Mysteries on the History Channel here in South Africa. The documentary highlighted the significance of this largely unknown area and its important historical heritage – one that we hope to share with all our visitors to Pafuri.

Welgelegen House: Cape Town’s No. 1 Guest House

Welgelegen House had a stellar year keeping its top spot as Cape Town’s No. 1 guest house on Tripadvisor. Guests couldn’t stop raving about its charm, prime location, and warm hospitality.

On top of that, both Welgelegen House and the Pafuri Collection were recipients of Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards in 2024, a mark of RETURN Africa’s dedication to the guest experience at our properties in Cape Town and Pafuri.

Godfrey Baloyi: A True Spirit of Madiba

A proud moment for us at RETURN Africa – our very own Godfrey Baloyi was celebrated by Daily Maverick as someone who embodies the “Spirit of Madiba.” His dedication to community upliftment, conservation and guest experience is what we strive for. In his words, “I am deeply humbled by this nomination and greatly appreciate the spotlight it shines on the incredible relationship that has developed between RETURN Africa and the Makuleke community,”

Rare Bird Sightings at Pafuri

Birding enthusiasts had an exciting year at Pafuri! The Olive bee-eater, spotted by our guide Zach Savage, a first for the region and perhaps South Africa.  A Spur-winged lapwing, spotted by one of our guests, was another standout sighting for the year. These moments reinforce Pafuri’s status as a top birding destination in South Africa.

Neil Parkin’s Hyena Chronicles

Scientist, Neil Parkin brought Pafuri’s hyena clans to life, revealing their complex social dynamics and shattering misconceptions about these misunderstood animals. From matriarchal structures to their vital role in the ecosystem, Neil’s work has given us a newfound appreciation for these fascinating creatures. When you’re next at Pafuri, ask to see his presentation on the hyena clans of Pafuri or read more about his finding on this blog here: Hyenas of Pafuri | Neil Parkin | Substack

An African Story Launches

In 2024, RETURN Africa launched An African Story, a luxurious villa in Camps Bay, Cape Town. Nestled between the iconic Table Mountain and the glistening Atlantic Ocean, this exclusive property offers guests a seamless blend of elegance, comfort, and unparalleled natural beauty. This addition to RETURN Africa’s portfolio invites guests to experience Cape Town’s vibrant energy while enjoying a serene retreat in one of its most sought-after locations.

Pafuri Guide’s 2024 Most Memorable Moments

A highlight of 2024 for guides Zach Savage and Vongani N’waila was helping with the collaring of an endangered African wild dog pack that briefly called the concession home. Zach recalls, “It was a privilege to join the team in monitoring these incredible animals. Hopefully, they’ll RETURN soon!”

Enos Mngomezulu, our hospitality manager, shared a profound moment during the dry season when conditions at Pafuri get tough. A guest who loved warthogs witnessed the raw power of nature as a crocodile struck a warthog that was grazing by the riverbank. Shaken but supported by our staff and fellow travellers, the guests came to appreciate the balance and beauty of life in the wild. For Enos, it was a reminder of the deep connections formed at Pafuri – not just with nature, but among those who experience it together.
