“As a boy, I gazed across the Luvuvhu to what was, in those apartheid years, forbidden country to the north. I did not then understand the things happening there. But even as a child, I knew I would one day return. When I did, many years later, I met the Makulekes whose land it once was and would be again. I am deeply grateful to them for granting their trust to me. Today, as proud partners, we invite you to join us by visiting the dream we call RETURN Africa.”
PJ Massyn, co-founder and CEO
Travel, as it was meant to be. A RETURN.
At RETURN Africa, we believe travel is more than movement, it is a return. A return to origin, rhythm, and meaning. To the land that shaped us and the stories carried in its landscapes. A return to stillness, to presence, to the soul of southern Africa.
Our journey began not with bricks or blueprints, but with a calling: to breathe life back into Pafuri Camp, deep within the ancestral lands of the Makuleke people in northern Kruger. After the 2013 floods, we didn’t just rebuild, we restored. A place of memory. Of reverence. A place to return to.
From there, RETURN Africa grew naturally. Baobab Hill House became a private bush home where families and friends could gather around firelight. Hutwini and Nkula, our seasonal walking camps, followed, simple, soulful spaces where nature speaks in quiet rhythms. Together, they form the Pafuri Collection: a constellation of wild experiences where biodiversity, culture, and community meet.
In 2017, our path led south to Cape Town. First to Welgelegen House, a tranquil Victorian retreat at the foot of Table Mountain. Then, in 2024, to An African Story, a bold villa in Camps Bay, where mountain and ocean meet in elemental harmony.
From the fever tree forests of Pafuri to the ocean air of the Cape, we don’t just offer places to stay, we invite you into stories that continue long after you leave. Walk gently through wild spaces, watch the Luvuvhu River drift by your tent, or gaze across the Atlantic from your pool.
Whether in the bush or by the coast, barefoot simplicity or coastal elegance, every RETURN Africa journey is a return; to nature, to culture, to meaning.
Our Properties

Pafuri Collection
Set in the far north of Kruger National Park, the Pafuri Collection is where wild landscapes, deep heritage, and the warmth of shared stories meet.
Stay beside the Luvuvhu River at Pafuri Camp, gather with loved ones at Baobab Hill House, or walk softly from Hutwini and Nkula, our seasonal walking camps. Guided by seasoned rangers, you’ll move through fever tree forests and ancient cultural sites, finding connection, wonder, and the soul of wild Africa.
Become a Pafurian, part of a community that returns, again and again, to a place that stirs the spirit.
Cape Collection
In Cape Town, RETURN Africa offers two distinctive stays: Welgelegen House, a tranquil Victorian retreat at the foot of Table Mountain, and An African Story, a bold villa in Camps Bay where mountain and ocean meet in elemental harmony.
Whether you seek the pulse of the city or the hush of the coast, both offer a warm, graceful welcome and a place to return to, for culture, cuisine, and the beauty of the Cape.

At RETURN Africa, hospitality is personal. It’s in the welcome, the stories shared, and the care offered at every turn
In Pafuri, our Makuleke management team leads with quiet pride, deep roots, and an intimate understanding of the land. In Cape Town, our hosts greet you with warmth and presence, ensuring every guest feels truly at home.
Whether tracking wildlife through Pafuri’s forests or sharing breakfast in a sunlit Cape Town courtyard, our team brings every moment to life with heart, humour, and humanity.
Here, you’re not only a guest, you’re part of the RETURN.
