Impact & Sustainability 2024
Every journey with RETURN Africa restores dignity, strengthens community, and protects biodiversity.

What guides RETURN Africa
At RETURN Africa, impact is not measured in numbers alone, but in lives touched, ecosystems protected, and stories shared.
Born from a thirty‑year partnership with the Makuleke community, our work is guided by restitution, stewardship, and respect. From the fever‑tree forests of Pafuri to the quiet elegance of Welgelegen House, we create spaces where nature is honoured, cultures are shared with care, and every guest becomes part of a larger story of restoration and belonging.

Impact at a glance
The Makuleke community is at the heart of RETURN Africa’s story, with 92% of Pafuri staff drawn from its people and 83% of leadership roles held locally, while women make up 57% of the wider team.
Their stewardship is matched by environmental progress: solar power generated 213 MWh in 2024, cutting diesel use by 65% and avoiding 93 tonnes of carbon emissions, while water consumption at Pafuri was halved. Alongside record environmental audit scores and nearly R1 million invested in shared infrastructure, 10% of Pafuri Collection’s revenue flowed directly to the Makuleke CPA, ensuring that every guest journey supports community empowerment, conservation, and continuity.

Environmental Stewardship
Our energy strategy is rooted in conservation. Solar power now supplies 82% of Pafuri Camp’s electricity, reducing reliance on diesel and avoiding 93 tonnes of carbon emissions in 2024.
Water use has been halved through awareness campaigns, borehole supply, and wastewater reuse. Across all properties, we are phasing out single‑use plastics, replacing guest amenities with sustainable alternatives.
Biannual environmental audits in Pafuri, conducted independently, confirm our progress, with a record average score of 96% in 2024.

Community Empowerment
Impact begins with people. At Pafuri, 92% of staff are Makuleke community members, and 83% of leadership roles are held locally. Women make up 57% of our team, reflecting our commitment to inclusiveness.
Through mentorship, accredited guiding courses, and internal promotion, we nurture talent and create meaningful career pathways.
Stories of growth:
- Memory Masuku rose from housekeeper to Guest Relationship Manager at Welgelegen House.
- Hlahla Chauke & Andile Mabunda grew from camp hands to respected guides.
- Godfrey Baloyi advanced from guide to General Manager, recognised nationally for his leadership.
These journeys embody our belief in unlocking potential and building futures rooted in community stewardship.

Responsible Travel
Every guest journey contributes to conservation, education, and resilience.
Walking through fever‑tree forests or climbing Table Mountain is not just an experience, it is a way of renewing the bond between people and place. Guests are invited to engage with culture, environment, and conservation, ensuring that travel becomes a force for restoration and respect.

Financial & Governance Impact
RETURN Africa’s model ensures direct benefit to the Makuleke community: 10% of Pafuri Collection’s gross revenue flows to the Makuleke CPA.
We invest in shared infrastructure — from roads to water systems — strengthening both community and conservation. Governance is transparent, with co‑management agreements alongside SANParks and the Makuleke CPA ensuring accountability and long‑term stewardship.
Our work is far from done.
But 2024 shows what steady, respectful presence can achieve: restored dignity, thriving ecosystems, and empowered communities.
We invite you to return; to nature, to community, to Africa.
