Rita Crossney
At the foot of Table Mountain, tucked into the historic suburb of Gardens, Welgelegen House offers a Cape Town morning like no other. The city’s usual rhythm softens here, replaced by birdsong, gentle light filtering through the courtyard trees, and the warm aroma of fresh baking.
It’s not just the brewed coffee or serene setting that makes mornings at Welgelegen memorable. It’s Rita’s seed loaf – fresh from the oven and prepared with the kind of care that can’t be rushed or replicated.
It is not just a recipe, but a gesture of heart.
A morning tradition, at Welgelegen, that speaks of our hospitality, generosity, and the comfort of being known.
Rita’s Loaf: A Recipe Woven into the Story of Welgelegen
Since 1996, Rita has been far more than a cook. She is a custodian of comfort, a quiet presence who welcomes each guest not with fanfare, but with sincerity. Her seed loaf, made daily and served still warm, has become a hallmark of mornings at Welgelegen.
Every day, with care and consistency, she prepares her signature recipe. And in doing so, offers more than a meal, she offers a connection. A sense of belonging. A taste of what makes this place feel like home.
“It’s more than just baking,” she says, hands still floured. “It’s about sharing a part of myself. When people taste the loaf and smile, I know they feel at home.”
And this feeling of home stays with them, the warmth, the bread and the memory of those mornings at Welgelegen House.
Guests carry this feeling with them, to Berlin, Toronto, Sydney, baking from memory, hoping to capture not just the flavour, but the quiet comfort of a Cape Town morning at Welgelegen.

Victorian Accents at Welgelegen House
Where Heritage Meets Heart
Before it became the elegant guesthouse it is today, Welgelegen was once two Victorian family homes and, for a time, a Jewish orphanage offering sanctuary to those in need. That deep thread of care is still present in every detail.
Today, reimagined as a 14-room hotel, Welgelegen continues to hold onto its heart.
The rooms are thoughtfully appointed, offering comfort with character. The courtyard is shaded and still, inviting moments of pause. The staff are attentive and intuitive, offering thoughtful gestures and local insight with genuine warmth.
“Rita is part of the heart of this place,” says Prince, General Manager of RETURN Africa’s Cape Town portfolio. “Guests may come for the mountain or the markets, but they RETURN for people like her.”

Once the rhythm of your morning at Welgelegen has settled, perhaps after a quiet moment in the courtyard or a second helping of Rita’s famous seed loaf, you’ll find the city waiting just beyond our graceful front door.
Step out into Gardens, one of Cape Town’s most characterful neighbourhoods, where creativity, culture, and history meet at every corner. Meander down to the cafés and boutiques of Kloof Street, take a scenic walk through the Company’s Garden, or catch the cableway to the top of Table Mountain for views that will leave you breathless.
A short drive brings the golden sands of Camps Bay and the vibrant hum of the V&A Waterfront into reach. But start slow. Cape Town isn’t going anywhere.
Because here, how you begin your day matters. And mornings at Welgelegen are made to linger.

A Final Slice
In an age of impersonal stays and identical hotel rooms, Welgelegen House offers something refreshingly different. A place where heritage meets heart.
