Is Cape Town the most beautiful and romantic city in Africa? We think so. It’s an easy city to love, and also a great place to fall in love. Maybe it’s the weather, maybe it’s the wine, but there’s something in Cape Town that makes it the perfect venue for a wedding proposal. And, if all goes to plan, the Cape and its hinterland offers so much to do and see that it’s a place to revisit for many happy years.
During your stay, there will be plenty of romantic moments when it feels right to ask the question, but you can help things along with some planning. Here are our top 10 romantic ideas, a gift from us to you.
A Mountain with a View
Let’s go straight to the top. Take the cableway to the summit of Table Mountain in late afternoon, as the sun dips towards the South Atlantic ocean. Want some privacy? Just follow one of the marked trails for a few hundred metres and you’ll be alone together.
Another great option is to head for Signal Hill or neighbouring Lions Head, where you can have a view of the sunset on one side, and Table Mountain on the other.
Get there: Both the Table Mountain cableway station and Signal Hill are 10 minutes by car from Welgelegen Boutique Guest House. Just ask and we can organise a picnic and transport, and a guide if required.
A vineyard ticks all the romantic location boxes: the classic Cape vista of rolling fields of vines surrounded by flowering trees and backed by rocky escarpments, together with attractive colonial architecture and some of Africa’s finest dining. They also know how to host romantic occasions and can arrange a bespoke picnic or lamp-lit table service that will set the mood nicely.
Get there: Ask at Welgelegen Boutique Guest House for our suggestions on the best vineyard venues. We have our own touring vehicle and driver at your disposal.
Get to the Point
The Cape of Good Hope is another one of those special Cape places, where nature and history meet. Although it’s popular with visitors, it is easy to escape the crowds and find a grassy headland with a view of waves crashing onto the ancient rocky shore. You might spot a seal or whale below, while ostrich, zebra and antelope roam freely in the reserve.
Get there: Cape Point and the nearby Cape of Good Hope are in the Cape Peninsula Reserve, about an hour south of the city. Let Welgelegen Boutique Guest House provide the transport, picnic and a guide to help pick the very best spot.
A Restaurant with Cape Class
Cape Town weather can be wild, especially in winter, so if you want to play it safe for that special moment, pick one of the many fine restaurants in the city and surrounds. High on any list is La Colombe, a highly rated establishment that fuses Asian and French cuisines. From May 2020, a sister restaurant “La Petite Colombe” will open in Leeu Estates near Franshoek.
Get there: La Colombe is in the Silvermist wine estate at the top of Constantia Nek, a 30 minute drive from Welgelegen Boutique Guest House.
Ballooning over the Vines
Sailing over the Cape winelands in a colorful balloon as the sun rises has to be the ultimate romantic experience. The folks at Go Ballooning can make it happen, and even offer special engagement flights. It’s weather dependent, so be sure to have a back-up plan just in case.
Get there: The balloon launch site is less than 40 minutes drive from Welgelegen Boutique Guest House, and we can organise the transport.
Another idea for the adventurous is a boat trip, but like ballooning, it’s weather dependent so have a reserve plan. Sailing catamarans depart from the V&A Waterfront, and cruise down the Atlantic coast, with incredible views of the coastline. There are also private cruises under sail or by motor yacht.
Get there: The V&A Waterfront is less than 15 minutes from Welgelegen Boutique Guest House.
For a truly memorable experience, see the Cape from above with a helicopter tour for two. Cape Town Helicopters operate from the waterfront, and you can choose from a number of scenic flights, or even take a trip to the winelands for a romantic lunch.
Get there: The helipad is at the East Pier, 15 minutes drive from Welgelegen Boutique Guest House.
Washed by rolling waves from endless oceans, the Cape’s beaches are made for romantic occasions. Spread a picnic blanket on the sand at Clifton and watch the sun arc towards the horizon. Or, for a splendid view of the whole city backed by Table Mountain and Lions Head, take a trip to Bloubergstrand to the north.
Get there: Clifton beach is just 10 minutes from Welgelegen Boutique Guest House, and Blouberg is 30 minute drive. Ask at Welgelegen and we can organise transport, a picnic and a guide if required.
Welgelegen Boutique Guesthouse
If your style is understated sophistication, then our Victorian-era Welgelegen Boutique Guest House could be the perfect venue for that big question. Order a glass of wine in our cosy drawing room, or a fresh fruit juice in the garden, gaze at the clouds caressing Table Mountain.
And finally, a little cheat. It’s not in the Cape, it is in the diametrically opposite corner of the country. Pafuri Camp, our quintessential wild Africa sister property in northern Kruger National Park, is not only the perfect venue for an engagement but also an alluring honeymoon destination and a magical place for a lifetime of special anniversaries.
