A guide to what’s on and what to do in Pafuri with RETURNAfrica. Whether you are looking for adventure, a family safari or to learn something new, Pafuri has everything to offer and more. Look out for the Elephant Experience and Birding Courses that will be run throughout the year.

Pafuri Walking Trails

RETURNAfrica’s Pafuri Walking Trails (run from April to October) epitomise the essence of experiential travel. Guests experience the remote areas of the northern Kruger National Park on foot with experienced field guides and really get to immerse themselves in this part of the world that is wild, rugged and offers an authentic ‘back-to-nature’ experience.

Added to the four-day Walking Trails, RETURNAfrica also offer a seven-night full-moon walking trail, as well as a ‘Luxury’ walking trail (where guests stay overnight at the luxury Pafuri Camp).

Community and Cultural Interaction

Community is at the heart of the RETURNAfrica experience, and we offer guests (whether large or small groups) the opportunity to participate in village tours to Makuleke village, where they will get to interact with the local people, enjoy traditional dance and music, listen to traditional storytelling, buy locally made arts and crafts and visit a sangoma.

Elephant and Birding Experiences*

We have recently introduced special birding and elephant experiences for our guests. Both experiences take place over seven days and include lectures, discussions, walking and driving in the exquisite wilderness area that is Pafuri. The experiences are led by Johna Turner, a conservationist and expert on the region.

More than 350 bird species have been recorded in the northern Kruger National Park and the birding experience will incorporate the different habitats over the duration of the trail.

The elephant experience will give the guests an opportunity to learn about elephant behaviour, population growth, movements and migration, habitat use and life cycle.

The CEO of RETURNAfrica, Peter John Massyn, says, “We are very pleased to offer the birding and elephant experiences in Pafuri. Our clients are looking for deeper ways to understand this region that is so rich in biodiversity, and the privilege of learning under the guidance of wildlife experts like Johna Turner is going to be an unforgettable experience for anyone who takes part.

Experiential activities suitable for the whole family

RETURNAfrica’s Baobab Hill Bush House is a comfortable homestead situated by a small hill near the Luvuvhu River and is the perfect option for families that wish to experience Pafuri. It consists of four bedrooms and sleeps up to eight people, with a kitchen, open-plan dining room and lounge and a swimming pool. The property is fenced, offering a child-friendly environment. Activities on offer for families include game drives and short, informative bush walks in and around the camp under the guidance of one of our field guides (ideal for small children). There is an informal kids’ programme that gives little ones insight into the birds and smaller creatures of the region (this needs to be requested on the booking form prior to arrival).

Experiences can be tailor-made to suit a family’s needs (such as excursions to the Fever Tree Forest and specific lookout points).

Pafuri Bush Walks

For larger groups, RETURNAfrica offers a dedicated community experience into the local Makuleke village (as mentioned above). Daily walks are always a highlight for travellers and these can be organised for groups, as well as bird-watching experiences and team-building exercises that focus on the fauna and flora of the area. [Due to its exclusivity, RETURNAfrica Pafuri camp is limited in numbers any higher than 52.

The RETURNAfrica Pafuri experience is all about immersive or experiential travel.

“Whether guests have booked their place on the Walking Trails or are staying at Pafuri Camp or Baobab Hill Bush House, they will have the opportunity to have an authentic African experience”
